What should I wear to tour around India?
Modesty is Key: India is a country with diverse cultures and traditions, and it's important to respect local customs by dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites and rural areas. Here are some specific clothing recommendations:
Tops: Wear tops with sleeves, and avoid low-cut or revealing tops.
Bottoms: Choose longer pants, skirts, or dresses that cover the knees. Avoid shorts, especially in more conservative areas.
Scarves or Shawls: Carry a lightweight scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders and chest when needed.
Comfortable and Breathable Fabrics: India can be hot and humid, so lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton are excellent choices. Light-colored clothing can also help keep you cool in the sun.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good support are essential, especially for sightseeing. Be prepared to remove your shoes when entering temples and some homes, so slip-on shoes can be convenient.
What are the few cultural differences I should expect?
Clothing: Dress modestly and conservatively, especially at religious sites. Avoid revealing attire.
Personal Space: Expect crowded public areas. Queues may not always be observed.
Eating Etiquette: Use your right hand to eat.
Religious Respect: Follow dress codes, remove shoes at religious sites, and respect religious objects.
Haggling: Bargain respectfully in markets and with vendors. Negotiate prices with a friendly attitude.
Public Displays: Avoid public displays of affection, which may be considered inappropriate.
Tipping: It is optional and not expected. Tip in restaurants and for services, but check for service charges.
Photography: Ask permission before taking photos of people and follow the rules at religious sites.
Time Concept: Punctuality can vary, so be patient if appointments start late.
Toilet Paper: You might not find toilet paper available in public restrooms. If you prefer using toilet paper, it's a good idea to carry a small supply of toilet paper with you
